In many cases, the mucous retention cysts develop in the upper respiratory tract and can cause blockages and discomfort, but they can also occur on the lips, as well as in other areas of the body, such as the throat, vocal cords, salivary glands and sinuses. The cysts develop when mucous ducts are blocked, causing the mucous-producing glands to become enlarged. When a mucous retention cyst occurs on the inside of the lips, it is typically painless. It is filled with clear liquid, and is quite harmless, although it may appear as a noticeable bump with some discolouration on the mucous membrane.
